Reflection – September 2018

I am the hole in the flute that Christ’s breath moves through; listen to this music” Jascha Hafitz

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy;
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life…St. Francis of Assisi

I heard this lovely prayer anew today. Why should we sow love, pardon and faith or hope, light and joy? Is it an obligation? Is it a commandment? Will we get a reward if we do it? I have been reflecting on the role gratitude has in our lives recently, and that’s what I hear anew in this prayer. Whatever our most recent experience of God is, will become our response to the world. God doesn’t obligate us out of fear of punishment, or in the expectation of reward. God loves us, and we gratefully respond in our lives by loving. God forgives us, and so we forgive others, grateful for His mercy. Grace is a circle, it comes from God, is given to us, and through us returns to him. The circle of Grace is not a static thing, it has been described as a circle dance, a dynamic joyous movement. God acts first and we respond.

“For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return there until they have watered the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and succeed in the thing for which I sent it.” Isaiah 55: 11
